The AI Conversation We Need to Have

The biggest marketing mistake businesses are making with AI is thinking it can do everything.
There, I said it.
AI is a great tool. I use it often.
It helps me organise projects, summarise meetings, speed up research and knock hours off repetitive tasks.
However, somewhere along the way, too many business owners have mistaken using AI for doing marketing. AI is a tool. Marketing is a skill. The two work brilliantly together, but one should never replace the other.
A few months ago I shared a post on social media about the rise of AI and how I believed the real winners wouldn't be the businesses using the most AI, but the ones who could combine it with good marketing. I still stand by that. AI is a helpful tool when it's used to support strategy, creativity and efficiency.
The problem is when it starts replacing the fundamentals instead of enhancing them. Good marketing principles haven't changed. AI simply gives us a faster way to apply them, not an excuse to ignore them.
The AI Trap
Over the last year I've noticed more and more businesses filling their social media with AI-generated posters...
You know the ones.
Heavy blocks of text. The same layouts. Too much text content. The same generic icons. Along the way, their business logos have been mysteriously stretched, redrawn or completely reinvented....
Every time I see one I cringe.
Not because AI created it.
Because someone thought it represented their business.
Your Brand Is Worth Protecting
One of the biggest jobs of marketing is building familiarity.
The more consistently people see your business, your colours, your style, your tone and your personality, the more they remember you and trust you.
That's Marketing 101.
When AI starts inventing its own version of your brand every second post, you're undoing that hard work.
Different fonts. Different colours. Different logo treatments. Different illustration styles.
Consistency disappears.
And consistency is what builds strong brands.
Social Media Is Already Noisy
People aren't scrolling because they're desperate to see another AI-generated motivational poster.
They're overwhelmed.
Every day they're seeing hundreds of pieces of content competing for attention.
The problem is that AI is making much of that content look almost identical.
The same "polished" graphics. The same predictable wording. The same safe ideas.
Everything starts blending together into one giant vanilla feed.
Nothing stands out.
"But It Saves Me Time..."
Absolutely. And that's where AI shines.
Use it to:
Draft captions
Brainstorm campaign ideas
Build a marketing checklist
Plan a month's worth of content
Summarise customer feedback
Generate headline ideas
These are smart uses of AI.
But requesting "Create me an Image" and posting whatever appears without any thought?
That's where things go sideways.
People Can Tell
Audiences are becoming incredibly good at spotting AI content.
It feels...
Flat.
Predictable.
Impersonal.
Businesses spend years trying to build trust, then accidentally chip away at it by filling their feeds with content that feels like nobody actually cared enough to create it.
That isn't the message any brand wants to send.
Engagement Is Falling...
Yes, there are lots of factors that impact engagement,
Algorithms have changed.
Competition has increased.
People are focusing their attention differently.
But filling your feed with generic AI artwork certainly isn't helping.
People don't engage with content because it's technically perfect. They engage because it connects with them.
The Content That Still Wins
Some of the best-performing content I see isn't professionally produced and certainly isn't AI created imagery,
It's:
A quick video filmed on a phone.
Someone sharing what happened behind the scenes.
A customer story.
A funny moment at work.
A project you're proud of.
Real people.
Real businesses.
Real stories.
That's what people connect with.
My Advice
Use AI for heavy lifting.
I certainly do.
But don't hand over your brand and hope for the best.
Protect your logo.
Protect your consistency.
Protect your reputation.
And most importantly...
Protect the human side of your business.
Because that's still the part your customers remember and value.
